Please take a look at the item below. If you were so inclined to buy it (which for this exercise we will assume you would be), how much would you be willing to pay for it?

It is 7 x 6 1/2, and has 3 different sizes of paper – 6X 2 1/2, 6 x 5, and 6 X6. Some of the paper has stamped images, all of the pages have inked edges.

At this moment

in my house:

Zoe is laying on the couch under the blanket her grandma made for her sister, watching Word World and hopefully learning how to spell the words kite, wings, ant, and stage; and how to not give up. She is also slowly but surely getting aggravated because

Audrey is laying on the floor babbling and yelling rather loudly. She is surrounded by her toys which she keeps rolling around to reach so that she can grab and munch on them.

Eggos are toasting in the toaster for me and Zoe.

B is getting ready for work.

I just discovered that Neptune by Tula Pink, the fabric collection with which I want to make a massive quilt for my bed, is out! Now I just have to come up with a pattern. I’m thinking very large blocks of
neptune-23030-30-450 and neptune-23031-13-450, and maybe neptune-23032-11-450, bordered with neptune-23033-22-450 and neptune-23035-26-450. This will probably show up in there too: neptune-23037-19-4501 Seeing as I have another blanket that’s still not done, who knows when I will get to this one, but maybe if I make it simple enough I’ll get it finished.

I need to figure out what I’m doing with my day, keeping these thoughts in mind. Also keeping in mind that my house is a mess and and I need to be utterly ruthless about clutter. (Those small things add up in more ways than one!)

And now I’m hearing a revisionist history of what just happened on Word World. “Mama, shark did take ducks hat! He did take it away!” “Did he take it, or did Duck throw it and it landed on shark?” “Uh, duck did throw it.” That and apparently everything on her body is “killing me”. An owie on her leg, on her toe, on her hand… something tells me my computer time is up.

What’s going on at your house at this moment?

What’s going on lately

As my Auntie pointed out, I haven’t posted for a while. My brain’s been going in a lot of different directions, and while I’ve been feeling like I should write about some things, it just hasn’t happened. So, instead of a deep, thought provoking post, here are some things going on around here lately, complete with illustrative links.

Zoe’s new favorite show is Word World. I highly recommend it. She’s watched 2 episodes about 4 times each, and can now spell rope and ball from memory.

We have a new car- Tina. She’s a lovely 06 Mustang- a little sister to our 65 Mustang, Parker. Parker is named for the amazing Mrs. Dorothy Parker, and Tina is named after her heir apparent, Tina Fey. Just for the record, the car I drive doesn’t really have a proper name, he’s just called Cool Car. For a while we were calling him Brock (after Brock Sampson) but that didn’t really stick, and Z thinks he’s a cool car, so that’s what we’ve gone with.

I had a lovely birthday, we had a tea party, stake play finished, and B and I went out for an amazing dinner. I got a spoilicious gift card for Lush and a Zutter Bind-it-all HOORAY!! I will be posting some projects I’m making with it soon.

Audrey has been going back and forth with her sleeping, (case in point- she’s supposed to be taking a nap right now and isn’t) she will wake up at 4 in the morning, completely awake and ready for her day. Not so fun. But isn’t she cute?

It’s supposed to be quite warm today, and thus is our first official pool day. Zoe can’t wait to get back in the water, we’re not going over to the pool until 11, and I think she might die of anticipation before then.
Here are pictures of her celebratory dance, performed this morning.:

Isn’t Z’s hair crazy long?

My hair, on the other hand, is not crazy long, and it’s making me kind of crazy. I’m trying to grow it out, and it’s threatening to make me insane. See:

I also got a super awesome new little camera, which I love, and I used to take those pictures. :) I also have a super cool (so cool it could perhaps be called wicked cool, although I rarely use the term) wifi card that transfers the pictures from my camera to the computer magically. I love technology.

I got to see my friend Hilary earlier in the week, which was fantastic. :)

I’m on a rampage to clear my house of anything I don’t love- we’re surrounded by clutter and it’s making me crazy.

I think that’s all. :) What’s going on with all of you?

A little PS. We’re back from the pool, and oh my goodness the screaming. Swimming lessons are in our future, to remind of the love and skill possessed last summer.

Musical goodness

Very often while in the car we listen to the kids station on Sirrius. The other day we encountered a new song that is adorable and surprisingly pensive and lovely. It’s my new favorite kids song, and perhaps even my new favorite song all together. It’s called It Only Takes One Night to Make a Balloon Your Friend by Lunch Money. Check it out. I guarantee it will make you smile.

Zoe’s current favorite song is the polar opposite of pensive and lovely, but will also make you smile- it’s called Banana by Doctor Noize, and I’m not listening to it at the moment, but I’m fairly confident that the complete lyrics are: Banana. (If you click on that link the option to listen to the song is on the left side of the screen. #8.)

I’m super excited to see that the Pet Shop Boys have a new album coming out, and it sounds awesome. I can say that because if you follow that link you can listen to the album, so go do it!

That’s really all I have to say.
What are you listening to?

In response to Brandy’s question about Dancing with the Stars

So, a couple posts back I talked about this season of Dancing with the Stars and Brandy commented:

“i figured, based on the names, that shawn johnson would do good, kinda like kristy the ice skater back there; cause what she usually does is similar to dancing. am i wrong?”

Here’s the deal with that, because I’ve actually given this whole thing a lot of though. (Before Brandy’s comment. I way over think these shows.) And I figured I’d give it its own post, because who knows if anyone’s even checking old comments, and it’s my blog and I can do what I want.

Previous contestants have attested to the fact that having figure skating or gymnastics or such training is actually a little bit of a detriment, because they have to unlearn the movements they know. For example, figure skaters push off with their feet differently than dancers do, and that’s something Kristi struggled with.

Shawn is going to be interesting to watch in a different way, because as she herself said when told by her partner that she needed to show her connection to the dance on her face, that she didn’t know how, because “in gymnastics, showing emotion is weakness”.

The reason I think she has a strong probability of winning is because she’s an Olympian. Previous seasons have shown that no one can compete with the Olympians. They know how to train, how to commit, how to focus. They’re used to pain, and to having coaches.

So I think she’ll overcome her “gymnast arms” and her plastered on smile, and could take home that hideous discoball trophy.

Because you all wanted to know. :)

There’s an object lesson in here somewhere

The other day I made my daughter cry on purpose. That sounds horrible, I know. Here’s what happened.

Z has a naptime every day. Many of those days, she doesn’t sleep. For the first while (ranging between a half an hour and an hour, depending on the day) she has to try to fall asleep, although that often consists of very little actual trying and a lot of singing and storytelling. Once that time is over, she can have toys and books to play with- still on her bed. Through all of this, she’s supposed to stay on her bed.

For a couple days running, when I went into her room to give her some books and toys, it was obvious that she’d gotten off of her bed and gotten some toys. I struggled with how to deal with this, because she really needs to nap, and I needed to find a way to help her do that. What I knew was that her getting out of bed for toys wasn’t helping. So I warned her that if she did it again, I was going to take all of the toys she could get to in her room (there’s a bunch in her closet she can’t get to- but plenty near her bed) and box them all up and put them where she couldn’t get to them. (During her nap. I’d give them back afterward. The giving her toys away threat is saved for the times when she won’t pick them up.)

The next day, a day when she particularly desperately NEEDED a nap (seriously, SO WHINY!!), I heard her get out of her bed, and went in just as she was climbing back in. So I very calmly took the toy away from her, went out and got some bins, and started putting all of her toys in them. The whole time I was doing it, she kept saying, “Don’t take my animals!”. So I asked her which animals, and she told me she meant the stuffed animals on her bed. Because, as she said, “They are here for me to play with. I mean, sleep with.”

So what did I do? I told her she could keep her Mimi Lion (he keeps her safe from all scary things) and boxed up the rest of them. Because taking everything else didn’t phase her. And she screamed and screamed and screamed for 15 minutes. And then she fell asleep. And she’s stayed on her bed everyday after that, and even slept for a number of them.

Like I said in the post title, I feel like there’s an object lesson in there somewhere.

My predictions for this season of Dancing with the Stars

You all know of my deep and abiding love of Dancing with the Stars. After having watched 7 seasons, I’m noticing some trends, so these are my predictions for the coming season. Let’s see how right I am.

Chuck Wicks and Julianne : The gimmick here is that they’re dating in real life. I predict at least one tear filled segment about how he doesn’t take this seriously, and thus, doesn’t take her life’s work seriously. Also, I predict we will see them singing together at least once, whether in a training segment (they need to reconnect and unwind) or during a Pro number.

Steve Wozniak and Karina: Steve will either be the first to go or will stay around way too long. As charming as he seems, and as long as I’d like him to stay, if only to watch his analyzing the process of dance slowly make Karina’s head explode, I hope he goes sooner than later. I just hate Karina’s face.

Belinda Carlisle and Jonathan: Many comments will be made about Belinda inspiring “older women” everywhere to follow their dreams. Never mind that she’s only 51. Her tango will be strong. She will go home solidly mid-season.

David Alan Grier and Kym Johnson: I can’t yet decide if I’m predicting David’s humor will get old or not. I’m hedging on the side of it not getting old, and him gaining popularity as the season progresses. I predict at least one argument with the judges. His strength will be ballroom, rather than latin- the judges will either chide him for not having enough fun with it, or for goofing off and not taking it seriously enough.

Shawn Johnson and Mark : Rumors will abound that they are dating. There will be plenty of comments from the judges about needing to break through her shell to show her emotions- most likely during the rhumba; whether or not this is really a valid criticism. The tide will turn halfway through the season and her youth will be held against her by the judges, but then there will be a “breakthrough” performance, when she gets over her imagined issues and the judges are back on her side. They will have a practice segment involving dancing at Disneyland.

Lil’Kim and Derek :Rumors will also swirl that they are dating. Kim will surprise the judges with her grace in the ballroom numbers, but won’t get overwhelming scores. At least once Len will scold them for inserting hip hop moves into their dance. Kim will cry at least once during the season, but most likely in regards to talking about something in her past, not because of frustration with dancing.

Holly Madison and Dimitry: The judges will consistently bemoan Holly’s hotness to dancing ability ratio. Bruno’s comments will border on incomprehensible and stalker-ish. There will be a practice segment, most likely for the rhumba, with Holly and Dimitry practicing on the beach. Dimitry will wear many chest baring outfits. Holly will probably do the same. She will go home early to mid-season, which will be sad because I love Dimitry. P.S. If they start dating I swear I will scream loud enough all of you will hear it.

Gilles Marini and Cheryl: They will continue playing up the whole super sexy thing in an attempt to win fans for someone who has none, and will continue verbally stressing the fact that he is super sexy, despite the fact that his young son is in the audience and it’s somewhat squicky. Luckily he can move, so that combined with the sexy thing should keep them in it for a while, as will the fact that Cheryl seems to enjoy dancing with him and therefore will be a joy to watch and people will vote for her. There will be a practice segment in a pool. There will also be rumors that he is leaving his wife for her.

Ty Murray and Chelsie: Unfortunately, I don’t see them lasting long. He’s just too hesitant. If they make it to the rhumba, she will have to bring Jewel in to reassure him that it’s ok for him to be sexy with a girl half his age. There will be a practice segment on his ranch or involving a mechanical bull.

Steve-O and Lacey: The judges will persist in being convinced he’s not taking things seriously, which will lead to much frustration on his part. There will be good, solid dancing, despite scoldings for being unconventional. Lacey will end up with a complete and total crush on him, while her constant touching him will make him crazy. There will be crying.

Denise Richards and Maksim: Again, there will be much bemoaning the hotness to dance ability ratio. She will continue to be somewhat stiff and awkward, Maks will make her cry multiple times; if she lasts long enough, her daughters will come to see her practice. She’ll go home fairly early on.

Lawrence Taylor and Edyta:There will be continued references to Emmitt Smith and Jason Taylor, which will frustrate Lawrence. There will be a practice segment where Edyta accompanies him to a football game. Edyta’s outfits will continue to be insanely skimpy and I will continue to adore her for it. They’ll make it beyond the half way mark of the season.

Melissa Rycroft and Tony: After coming out so strong this week, Melissa will falter next week but rally after that. She’ll keep getting votes, so it won’t matter either way.

I’m predicting Shawn Johnson, Melissa Rycroft, Gilles Marini, Lawrence Taylor, David Alan Grier and Steve-O will be there past mid-season.

There will be injuries (probably Denise and Holly), but none severe enough to send people home.

I may amend all of these next week when we see the second dances, but for now, that’s how I call it.

Did you watch? What did you think?

Randomness and Miscellany

I just misread something and had a moment where Nathan Fillion was going to be on Dancing with the Stars. He’s not. That was a good moment.

Why do I keep getting distracted from the book club books I’m supposed to be reading for the book club I created?

Seriously, I have like 15 books I want to be reading all at the same time. Almost none of them are for book club.

Wicked was amazing. Stunning. The costumes and choreography were gorgeous. Glinda was the funniest thing I’ve seen in a really long time. There was a part in the middle, when they’ve first arrived in the Emerald City that I’m pretty sure was referencing (visually) Rocky Horror Picture Show, what with the costumes and very pale faces and round sunglasses and crazy hair. If it’s true it was pretty awesome subliminal messaging that something deviant lies beneath the gorgeous exterior of Oz. It was just so so so dang good.
